In this message from Proverbs 26, Pastor Kit continues the “Summer of Wisdom” series by addressing the foolishness of loose lips. He reminds us that our words reveal the condition of our hearts, and that even believers still battle the remnants of foolishness that the gospel must root out. Using the images from the text, he shows how the fool meddles in conflicts that aren’t his—like grabbing a wild dog by the ears—and ends up wounded because he speaks before he listens.
The sermon also exposes the danger of using words for amusement or self-protection. Whether it’s dropping comments “just as a joke,” stirring things up like a madman shooting flaming arrows, or trying to cover a lie with more words, careless speech can wound relationships and reveal a heart more concerned with self than with loving others. Gossip fuels conflict like wood fuels a fire, and listening to gossip shapes us too—because what we take in sinks deep and begins to form our attitudes, assumptions, and even our relationships.
Ultimately, the message points us back to the gospel. Loose lips aren’t just a mouth problem but a heart problem. We don’t need better excuses—we need new hearts. Jesus, the One with no deceit in His mouth, died for deceivers like us so that we could be forgiven, transformed, and rooted in truth. As we follow Him, He reshapes our speech, our motives, and the overflow of our hearts so that our words reflect His character and bring life rather than destruction.
